In line with its sustainability policy and with a view to contributing responsibly to its ecosystem, Pesquera Hayduk signed an agreement with the social enterprise Bureo, through its Net Positiva Perú program, to recycle the more than 100 tons of fishing nets that the fishing company no longer uses each year and use this material to finance environmental and social projects. “We have been taking important steps to protect our oceans and promote sustainable fishing practices. In partnership with Bureo and Net Positiva Peru, we will start working together to give a second life to our fishing nets, transforming them into innovative and sustainable products, thus contributing to the fulfillment of the SDGs. We are committed to our mission to achieve a more sustainable future for all,” said José Arriola, Hayduk’s general manager.
Net Positiva is a program that guarantees a new use for disused fishing nets through an innovative recycling process. To do so, fishing companies must comply with not discarding, collecting, and storing in their warehouses the nylon 6 multifilament and/or high-density polyethylene fishing nets at the end of their useful life. “We are excited to continue the development of our NetPositiva solution for end-of-life fishing nets, now together with Pesquera Hayduk. Thanks to its commitment, we will be able to recycle more than 100,000 kg of fishing nets from their operations annually, generating more than $20,000 in funding for community projects and eliminating more than 150 tons of greenhouse gas emissions by replacing petroleum-based plastics,” said Ben Kneppers, co-founder and CEO of Bureo.
In turn, with the companies’ contributions for each kilo of nets recycled (the net weight is considered once the nets are clean), the program finances environmental and social projects carried out in the localities where the inputs are collected and other projects of similar interest. For this purpose, Hayduk agreed to allocate S/ 0.80 per kilo. In addition, the Net Positiva program provides certificates of participation of the total kilos recycled, including the amount of CO2 offset or reduced, which will serve for the measurements and reports made by the companies, which will also be endorsed by the National Fisheries Society (SNP).
